Do I Need Planning Permission For Solar Panels? Your Questions Answered

At FEC Renewables, we get asked a lot of questions about installing solar panels, but one of the most common is: Do I need planning permission for solar panels? Let’s break it down.

Planning permission for solar panels

In Most Cases, No Planning Permission Is Required

Good news! For most homeowners in the UK, installing solar panels falls under what’s called “Permitted Development.” This means you usually don’t need planning permission as long as certain conditions are met. These conditions include:

  • The panels must not protrude more than 200mm from the roof or wall surface.

  • They must not be installed above the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney).

  • In conservation areas or listed buildings, special rules apply, and you may need permission depending on your location and property type.

When Is Planning Permission Required?

Although most installations don't require planning permission, there are exceptions:

Grade 2 listed building

Listed Buildings: If you live in a listed building, you may need to get planning permission to install solar panels, please check with your local authority.

Conservation Areas & National Parks: If your home is located in a designated conservation area, national park, or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, additional rules may apply.

Ground-Mounted Solar Panels: If you’re planning to install ground-mounted panels, especially in large fields or gardens, you might need planning permission.

In most cases, you'll need Listed Building Consent before you can go ahead. An unauthorised installation is a criminal offence and attempting to carry one out could lead to criminal offence charges.

Commercial Properties

For businesses, solar panel installations also usually fall under Permitted Development, but the rules are slightly different. Factors such as the size of the installation and its visibility may require you to consult with your local planning authority.

How to Check?

To be absolutely certain, it’s always best to check with your local planning authority. At FEC Renewables, we can also help guide you through this process to make sure your installation is compliant with local regulations.

Why Go Solar Now?

With rising energy prices and increased government incentives, now is the perfect time to invest in solar power. Whether for your home or business, solar panels help you cut energy costs and reduce your carbon footprint.
